This event is part of the Fall Fridays Coastal Stakeholders series, a set of walk-and-talks around Portland and southern Maine. Join GMRI’s Coastal Flooding Community Science Project and a series of local perspectives for discussions of the unique impacts of sea level rise on various coastal stakeholders and the ongoing work to build resilience along our coasts.

A key part of southern Maine’s identity is the array of unique islands accessible from its coast, from Peaks out to Jewell up to Chebeague and beyond. Islands are truly frontline communities when it comes to sea level rise, connected to the mainland by causeways or ferries and with lots of directly coastal space and infrastructure. Join us at the ferry terminal in conversation with Long and Chebeague Island’s Resilience Fellows to discuss how islands are experiencing and responding to the impacts of coastal flooding and sea level rise, including coastal erosion. Learn to contribute coastal flood data to GMRI’s community science project and assess a site’s suitability for nature-based solutions to erosion with GMRI’s ShoreCorps Steward.
