Getting Youth Involved in Coastal Flooding Community Science
3:30 PM–4:30 PM | Online | PublicJoin this virtual event to learn how to involve youth in community efforts to prepare for impacts of costal flooding and sea level rise

We know that sea levels are rising and will continue to rise into the future. What we don’t know is how this will affect individual communities across the Gulf of Maine. By participating in the Coastal Flooding Community Science, students learn about sea level rise and make observations of coast lines at or around high tides. Their data will be used to improve predictions of coastal flooding events and inform decision making related to resilience actions.
In this online event for educators, Thursday, October 23rd from 3:30 to 4:30pm learn about project protocols, how to contribute data, and resources to support STEM learning through participating in a community science effort.
Support to educators include:
- Free, ready to use, NGSS-aligned classroom resources, including class slides, videos, activities, and identification materials
- Help with finding field sites and fieldwork materials
- Ongoing support from the project team
Benefits to students include:
- Connections to professional scientists and a network of peers involved in understanding local impacts of sea level rise
- Experience with fieldwork
- An authentic context for building STEM practices and understanding of localized impacts of climate change
- Experience contributing significant data to an ongoing research project
