FishSCORE2030: Supporting Climate-Resilience in Fisheries

GMRI Research Scientist Dr. Kathy Mills is leading a new collaborative effort to build an international network of scientists, stakeholders, and practitioners who will identify successful climate-resilience strategies from different regions around the world.
As climate change continues to threaten the health of ocean ecosystems and the commercial fisheries they sustain, it is more important than ever to identify resilience-enhancing measures in fisheries around the world.
GMRI Research Scientist Dr. Kathy Mills is leading a new collaborative effort to build an international network of scientists, stakeholders, and practitioners who will identify successful climate-resilience strategies from different regions around the world.
The decadal program, called Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030 (FishSCORE2030), is endorsed by the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science. The network, which already includes members from the U.S., Canada, Australia, Sweden, Italy, and Malaysia, will expand to include many more participants across the globe.
One point of emphasis for Dr. Mills and her collaborators is the concept of knowledge co-production — a collaborative process that convenes stakeholders with diverse knowledge to understand a problem and develop solutions. Dr. Mills and her colleagues outlined this strategy in an article published in the ICES Journal of Marine Science, entitled Co-production of knowledge and strategies to support climate resilient fisheries.
By leveraging local and regional partnerships around the world to co-produce knowledge, we hope to identify real-world strategies that achieve healthy ecosystems, resilient fisheries, and equitable benefits in the context of changing oceans.
