Aquaculture Analysis Shows Opportunity for Maine
Tidings | Dec 27, 2016
In a report published this fall, our aquaculture program team announced important findings from their recently completed market analysis for farmed shellfish in Maine.
Today, Maine’s aquaculture industry accounts only for approximately 1% of total domestic shellfish production, delivering approximately $6.5 million in landed value to Maine’s economy. The findings of this report indicate an opportunity to quadruple the landed value in Maine, with projected growth exceeding $30 million by 2030.
Since late last year, GMRI has convened Maine’s aquaculture industry — including active farmers, leading consultants, trade groups, and others — to better understand the current market challenges and opportunities for Maine in this global industry. This system-level focus is reflected in the report, and is meant to benefit the industry as a whole.
"Our goal is to help farmers grow their businesses, help the business community understand the investment opportunity, and help diversify and grow our coastal economy,” said GMRI President/CEO Don Perkins. “We firmly believe a healthy and robust aquaculture industry needs to include businesses of all sizes — large and small.”
