Zhuomin(Jasmine) Chen, Ph.D.

Senior Research Scientist I Physical Oceanographer

Zhuomin (Jasmine) Chen joined the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in September 2025 to establish and lead the Physical Oceanography Lab. Her research spans a broad spectrum of questions in physical oceanography, from investigating the fundamental drivers of marine environmental change to addressing applied challenges such as predicting ecosystem impacts in a changing climate. Central to this work is understanding how the coastal ocean, particularly the Northeast U.S. shelf and Gulf of Maine, is changing, and translating that knowledge into forecasts, indicators, and tools for decision-makers and communities.

Prior to joining GMRI, Zhuomin (Jasmine) earned her Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She then served as a Postdoctoral Investigator in Physical Oceanography at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, supported by a two-year National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship. Most recently, she was a Research Scientist at the University of Connecticut, where she led a NOAA-funded project on projecting future changes in the Gulf Stream warm-core rings, collaborated widely with academic and federal partners, and contributed to teaching courses in physical oceanography.

Outside of work, Zhuomin (Jasmine) enjoys exploring Maine’s coastline on long walks, taking easy hikes with her family, introducing her young son Dylan to the outdoors, and discovering new bakeries and coffee spots around Greater Portland.
