Jeff Bate

Jeff Bate is the Director of Innovation & Strategic Projects with GMRI’s Economic Development department. He is responsible for the design and delivery of interdisciplinary initiatives that accelerate progress across GMRI’s core priority areas in collaboration with internal and external partners.

Jeff joined GMRI in 2016 as the project manager of the NASA-funded Real World, Real Science project and managed the development of interactive education experiences for a range of GMRI’s audiences, including middle school youth and fishery stakeholders. More recently, he helped launch GMRI's Ventures work, designing and managing programs to support entrepreneurs and grow the region’s blue economy.

Prior to GMRI, Jeff held product management roles for several cleantech companies, including EnerNOC, OptiRTC, and Banyan Water. In these roles, he managed the design and implementation of real-time monitoring and control platforms to enable smarter water and energy use decisions.

Jeff received his A.B. in Geography, with a minor in Environmental Studies, from Dartmouth College. He also has an M.S. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering from Tufts University, where his research focused on watershed systems modeling. Outside of work, you’re most likely to find him on a mountain, in a river, or atop a bicycle.
